They're a tiny bit finicky to use, but if you stand on a pressure plate and drop them (unlike other physics objects that drop in front of you when you drop them, these will drop exactly where you're standing) they will keep the plate activated. If you take these three items into "So Close, So Far" it makes solving the puzzle (not to mention getting the star) much easier. The head, the hat, and one of the torso pieces can be carried through the purple gates. Ive played through A1 - A4 so far and have only encountered one star in A3. As a prerequisite, it is recommended that you leave the stars for your Ending C playthrough as you'll need most if not all the puzzles already completed for the solutions written below. Obviously, if you haven't gotten everything in Zone 1 of the Road to Gehenna DLC (not just the star in question) then beware, there are puzzle and easter egg spoilers ahead. I'm 99% sure this isn't supposed to be the solution, since I've looked at some videos on YouTube and the way other people are getting this star seems much more "proper" than what I did, but there's something strange enough about my "outside the box" solution that I'm wondering if I stumbled onto the tip of something else. Almost all of the QR codes are readable in-game, just hover your cursor over the QR code while standing close and the message should pop up.
